CLEVELAND Forde and Alika Morgan were adjudged the Athletics Association of Guyana’s (AAG) top performers for the year 2012. This disclosure was made when the AAG held its annual Awards Ceremony at the Thomas Lands YMCA last Friday evening.
Both Forde and Morgan, who have dominated the local circuit in the men’s and women’s categories respectively, as well as performing outstandingly regionally, were named the AAG’s top athletes ahead of Cleveland Thomas and Alicia Fortune.
The junior male and female athletes’ awards went to Olesto Thomas and J. Streaker respectively, while the most promising Young Athlete award went to Shaquil Smartt.
Cheryl Sam won the AAG’s Official-of-the-Year award while Junior Edmonds won the Coach-of-the-Year award.
In brief remarks, Guyana Olympic Association’s (GOA) executive Charles Corbin congratulated the recipients of the awards and also said that his organisation has contributed financially towards the CARIFTA Games’ athletes who will represent Guyana at the upcoming Games to be held in the Bahamas next weekend.
“The GOA is always willing to offer support to any athlete; we are committed to this,” Corbin stated emphatically.
Newly elected AAG president Aubrey Hutson congratulated the awardees and said his association would be looking to strive for greater success this year, much more that they achieved last year. “We would be looking at where we went wrong last year and correct those things this year, since we plan to put our best foot forward.” (Michael DaSilva)
