ON A NIGHT of real enterprising Futsal football action, the first of this year’s Banks DIH-sponsored Linden ‘Guinness’ Greatest of the Streets’ Futsal championships, three teams chalked up impressive wins at the Amelia’s Ward/Wisroc Mini Bus Park in Mackenzie, Linden last Sunday night. There were six wins, one draw and one walkovers on the night when most impressive were Coomacka United who blanked Exodus 3-0, Topp Class who hammered their way to a 4-0 win over Mini Bus Crew and Silent Assassin who stopped Barsenal 3-1.
Other wins on the night came from Cherokee Park who opened the night’s proceedings following an introduction to the teams by Banks DIH Linden Branch Manager Shondell Easton, Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste, Outdoor Events Manager Mortimer Stewart and Communications Manager Troy Peters .
Veteran player Aubrey Fredericks was the man responsible for the opening goal of this year’s tournament when he scored the lone goal of the contest between Cherokee Park and Pokerburg in the 12th minute for the former team.
Game two of the night saw Speightland United, through goals by Allan Carrington who netted in the 4th minute and Julian Roberts in the 6th, defeat South Stars by a 2-0 score line.
Then the most impressive performance came from Coomacka United who displayed superb skills to score an exciting 3-0 victory against fellow Mines team Exodus, thanks to Jermaine Daw’s brace (4th and 11th) which followed an early goal from Adrian Edmondson in the first minute of the game.
This was followed by Topp Class’ 4-0 drubbing over Mini Bus Crew as Ray Bobb-Semple netted the first goal in the 4th minute, John Watterton 7th, Sean Brewley 15th and Watterton adding his second in the 18th minute.
There was the usual Guinness break in proceedings and when the action resumed in the second segment, Silent Assassin, led by the goal of the night from former national player Collie Hercules, overcame Barsenal 3-1.
In fact, Darwain Luke opened the scoring of the game for Barsenal when he slotted home a glancing shot as early as the 2nd minute before Hercules equalised with an unbelievable tough goal from the left as he was backing the goal but guided the ball past the defender, three minutes after Luke’s strike.
A rasping shot from Romain Haynes who scored twice first in the 7th minute and 13th minutes later, enabled Silent Assassin to achieve the win, before Hard Knocks defeated Eagles 2-1, through goals from Calvin David (4th) and Oswald Benjamin (20th) with Deron Smith scoring Eagles’ lone goal seconds before the final whistle blew.
The night’s lone stalemate was registered between Goal Getters and Wisrock, whose contest ended 1-1, with Ray Griffith scoring first for Goal Getters in the 14th minute before Clarence Higgins responded four minutes later for Wisrock, while Street Vybz was a no-show for their game against Star Boys.
The action will continue tomorrow night at the Amelia’s Ward court with eight more matches, commencing at 18:00hrs.
