In a recent interview with the media, Education Minister Priya Manickchand said the kids have been working very hard in preparation for this examination, and she wished them the very best results.
She pointed out that a large number of students usually write the examination, and a great number of them do well. She noted that the ministry is all set to administer this year’s examination.
The Minister said there is no non-placement of students who write this examination, a situation that previously obtained, as every single child in Guyana gets placed into a school for which they gained marks to attend.
She noted that after last year’s examination, the ministry had said very clearly that children will have to go to the schools into which they have been placed, but she added that there can be transfers to parallel schools after the results have been revealed.
The ministry, she said, is happy to report that while there were many parallel transfers, last year not a single child went into a school that required more marks than what he/she attained, something which the ministry hopes to maintain this year.
Meanwhile, Manickchand remarked that the ministry is looking at making sure that universal secondary education is attained.
She indicated that while in some regions this has already been accomplished, in other regions there is outstanding work to do. The yearly budgets would make people see the areas into which money is being put towards accomplishing this.
This year, she said, provided that Parliament will approve the money, the ministry is hoping to accomplish universal secondary education in at least two other regions in Guyana.
Pointing out that Guyana is a flag carrier for early childhood education, the Minister said education officials are now looking to formalize that by making nursery education compulsory across the country.
