Minister of Education Priya Manickchand says that in light of the views expressed by persons during countrywide consultations on the automatic promotion of students in the school system, her ministry will most likely have to re-work the programme. In a recent interview with the media, Minister Manickchand disclosed that the ministry will not be going forward as they have had in the past two years on the issue of automatic promotion and grade retention, and they are currently in the process of reviewing the programme.
The minister pointed out that they have heard from wide and far what the people of Guyana want, noting that those persons who were involved in the consultations included parents and teachers who discussed what might be best for the children.

In light of these consulations, she said that the ministry is looking at going back to the previous system which was the repetition of a class or grade.
She indicated that the ministry recognises the importance of these consultations, and always listen to the people.
However, she said at the same time working out the details as it relates to running a pilot programme in various schools across the country, which would allow for the repetition of particular subjects and not the entire class.
