GUYANA Cricket Board’s (GCB) Senior selection panel led by its Chairman Rayon Griffith yesterday selected and released the team which will take on the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) in the sixth round of this year’s West Indies Cricket Board-sponsored Regional 4-Day and Super50 tournaments. An out-of-form Demerara Cricket Club’s (DCC) wicketkeeper/batsman Derwin Christian who has to date scored 31 runs at an average of 10.33 in his four Super50 matches and 124 at an average of 15.50 in the same number of Regional 4-Day contests, was given the axe, even though he has the most dismissals as a wicketkeeper in the tournament to date.
His place in both formats is taken by 22-year-old wicketkeeper/batsman of Berbice, Anthony Bramble, who last played at this level for Guyana in the 2010 of the WICB’s Super50 tournament against the Leeward Islands, which the Guyanese lost by 23 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis System.
How well he fares with both the bat and gloves is left to be seen, since other reputable wicketkeeper/batsmen in Delbert Hicks and Jason Sinclair, whom he was granted the nod over based on his present form in the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board tournament, are waiting in the wings to take his place.
Making a return to the Esaun Crandon-coached and Veerasammy Permaul-led team is Everest Cricket Club opener Rajendra Chandrika, who has been in fine form with the bat on the local scene, after being given the axe for Guyana’s last encounter against Trinidad and Tobago, before the break.
Prior to being dropped, Chandrika played three matches against Leeward Islands, Barbados and Windward Islands and aggregated 157 runs at an average of 26.16, with a top score of 40 which was scored in Guyana’s second innings against Barbados.
DCC’s talented all-rounder and Super50 vice-captain Christopher Barnwell will not be available for the remainder of the season, due to his commitment with the India-based Royal Challengers Bangalore, in this year’s edition of the Indian Premier League.
Barnwell will depart these shores for the Asian continent next Friday and will be joined on the missing list by 16-year-old Tagenarine Chanderpaul and 18-year-old Ricardo Adams, who along with Shimron Hetmyer, Romario Shepherd-DeJonge and Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai will be engaged in a West Indies Under-19 preparatory camp.
Dependable West Indies middle order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul has indicated his availability to play for his country in the upcoming encounter against CCC and, along with his West Indies teammates Narsingh Deonarine and Ramnaresh Sarwan, has been included in the team for both matches.
Only one specialist opener in Trevon Griffith has been named in the Super50 squad, which has also seen the absence of former national skipper Assad Fudadin, who was however named in the 4-Day lineup and is expected to partner Chandrika at the top of the innings.
Apart from the abovementioned, all other players have been retained for both the Super50 and 4-Day matches which will be played at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, with the Super50 contest being a day/night affair that bowls off at 14:00hrs.
The host will take on the CCC from March 30 to April 2, the Regional 4-Day encounter followed by their Super50 contest on April 4, before they take on double defending champions Jamaica from April 10 to 14l in the Regional 4-Day, followed by their Super50 matchup on April 7, which is also a day/night fixture.
This will be the first set of regional matches in Guyana in a long time and it should give some confidence to the home team who have not done well in the competition so far, having amassed 6 points in the 4-Day from their four matches and 4 in the Super50, from the same number of matches.
