Safari to honour former Minister naming Nokta’s Peak

ONE of the highlights of the Pakaraima Safari will be the mounting of a sign on the highest point of the mountain, in Kurukubaru, which is located between the villages of Karasabai and Orinduik. The place will be named ‘Nokta’s Peak’, in recognition of former Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Mr. Harripersaud Nokta, who was a pioneer of the safari route.
This was revealed by Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), Mr. Indranauth Haralsingh, on Monday, at the GTA office in Sophia Greater Georgetown.
He spoke just after inspection of the vehicles that will be going on the journey.
Haralsingh said as a result of Nokta’s contributions, many communities gained access to the mountain range and he will be rewarded with a lifetime achievement award after this safari.
Haralsingh said the trip will entail a lot of camping activities, as the guest house has been fully booked and he noted that this is excellent because persons will get the opportunity to sleep under the stars and enjoy the exotic atmosphere and scenes.
Tour operators involved in the venture will be taking up persons by buses, he said, noting that this may be the last chance for some persons to see the waterfall where the Amalia Falls Hydro Project will be constructed.
Additionally, there are two film companies which will be joining the adventure, including Animal Planet. He said that would provide a lot of publicity and awareness for Destination Guyana.

Many arrivals

The GTA is anticipating many arrivals in Guyana for this event and they are being recorded at all ports of entry throughout the year, Haralsingh said.
Vehicles will depart GUYOIL Gas Station at Diamond, East Bank Demerara, at 01:00hrs on March 23 and travel through a number of Amerindian villages, to arrived at Lethem, in Region 9 (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo).
The villages include Karasabai, Monkey Mountain, Kato, and Orinduik.
The Pakaraima Mountain Safari is the adventure of a lifetime and entails travelling in 4×4 vehicles across Regions 4, 8, 9 and 10, starting below sea level and reaching approximately 3,800 feet above.
The journey takes participants through rugged terrain before reaching its destination at Orinduik Falls, lasting from March 22 to 30.
