Medical doctor fined for assault in his clinic

DR. ROOPAN Singh (no address given) pleaded guilty, before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell, Wednesday, to a charge of unlawful assault. He admitted that, on Sunday March 10, about 13:00 hrs, in Alexander Village, Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted Rizwan Mohamed.
Police Corporal Denise Booker, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant (VC) took a patient with an abscess to the doctor for a tetanus injection, but the person refused to lie on a bed and the medical practitioner became abusive.
The prosecutor said Mohamed reported that the doctor cursed and threatened to kill him, but attorney-at-law Mr. Khemraj Ramjattan, for the defence, told the Court that the defendant has been a medical practitioner for 25 years and has served the public compassionately.
The lawyer said, that day, the doctor was trying to get Mohamed out of his clinic and the latter declined to leave. So the doctor warned the VC that he will have to use reasonable force to put him out.
Ramjattan said it was the VC who used indecent language to the defendant.
However, the doctor was fined $80,000 with the alternative of two months imprisonment.
