GOVERNMENT, through the Office of the Prime Minister, will seek to boost the capacity of personnel attached to the power companies in Port Kaituma, Region 1, Mahdia, Region 8 and Lethem, Region 9, according to Prime Minister Samuel Hinds. Speaking at the Port Kaituma Power and Light building , Prime Minister Hinds said that should Parliament approve the Office of the Prime Minister’s 2013 budget, training will be implemented through the Guyana Power and Light to enhance the knowledge of those persons attached to these three agencies. The prime minister said that the training will specifically seek to address transmission and generator operations and repair, an area of expertise sorely lacking in all three agencies.
Prime Minister Hinds visited the Port Kaituma Power and Light to discuss with technicians how to bring an end to the electricity woes facing the community following the damage done to the company’s larger 625KVA generator by lightning
Accompanying the prime minister on the trip were Alliance For Change Member of Parliament Valerie Garrido-Lowe; A Partnership for National Unity MP, Richard Allen; and Mr Lall, a consultant who has experience in trouble-shooting generators.
The consultant, on examining the damaged unit, told the prime minister that he will get the system running in about two weeks.
In the interim, the company has been utilising its smaller 400KVA generator to power the community, but is unable to meet the demand in the peak period, hence the company’s decision to load-shed during this period.
The Office of the Prime Minister is at present working with the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission to obtain a second engine until the bigger generator becomes operational. (GINA)
