INCISIVE and penetrative fast bowling from National Under-15 pacer Ewart Samuels enabled Transport Sports Club (TSC) to rock the backbone of the Guyana Defence Force’s batting at the end of the first day of their Georgetown Cricket Association/Hadi’s Mall Incorporated two-day first division contest at the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) ground yesterday. At the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground, National Super-50 opener Trevon Griffith blasted his way to a ton for the home team who were locked in a battle for first-innings points with Police Sports Club (PSC), while at Camp Road Everest Cricket Club (ECC) snatched first-innings points from MSC.
At Thomas Lands, TSC won the toss and decided to bat first in hazy conditions and on a flat track, on which they posted 302 for 9 declared, thanks to Devon Nandan 66 (5×4, 3×6), Stephen Alves 49 (5×4, 3×6), Keon Morris 42 (5×4) and Charwayne McPherson 37 (4×4).
Roger Aaron and Paul Castello took three wickets each for 43 and 59 runs respectively for GDF who in their turn at the wicket were rocked by Samuels, who ended the day with 5 for 24 and Morris’ 2 for 20, to be 60 for 7 off 13 overs, with only Castello showing resistance with an unbeaten 30 (3×4), that is coming on the heels of four consecutive ducks.
What is surprising to note in this fixture is that GDF have within their bowling lineup, Trevon Garraway and Jeremiah Harris, two former national fast bowlers in their own rights who struggled to extract pace and at times bounce out of the track, while Samuels and Morris did so easily to the surprise and detriment of the Army’s batsmen.
When play resumes today, GDF will be hoping Castello can marshal the remaining batsmen to help them ease over the 100-run barrier, while TSC will be looking to Samuels and Morris to wrap up the proceedings early.
At DCC, Griffith struck 15 fours and one six in his 116 which, together with Andrew Gibson 67 (7×4, 1×6), Christopher Barnwell 66, Kemol Savory 30 and Derwin Christian (5×4) and Andrew Lyght Jr. 29 (5×4, 1×6) , piloted the home team to 351 for 6 declared in the face of some loose bowling from the lawmen.
Griffith and Barnwell added an even 150 for the third wicket, following the early demise of Lyght Jr. and Brian Sattaur (0) which left their team on 37 for 2, while Gibson, Savory and Christian threw their bat in the middle order, even as Randolph Knights took 2 for 40 for PSC, who were 27 for 2 at the close of play.
Like TSC and DCC, MSC, who were coming off the back of two consecutive defeats suffered at the hands of TSC and Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO), won the toss and chose to bat first but were bowled out for 154 off 45.1 overs.
Skipper Steven Jacobs returned to bolster their innings with a topscore of 68 (12×4, 1×6) while adding 79 for the third wicket with Vishal Narayan 34 (2×4), but only Jermaine Joseph who made 15 was able to post a respectable individual score, as the Thomas Lands-based team’s middle and lower batting faded.
Troy Gonsalves and Amir Khan took four wickets each for 47 and 71 runs respectively for ECC, who on the back of Chandrapaul Hemraj’s unbeaten 62 which was decorated with eight fours, Gonsalves’ 21 and Khan’s 19 (4×4), reached 169 for 4 off 58 overs at the close of play, to take first-innings points despite Shaquille Williams’ 2 for 44.
Play in all three fixtures will continue today from 09:30hrs.
