UNDER-19 cricketers, whose club competes in tournaments, organised under the auspices of the Rohan Sarjoo-led East Bank Demerara Cricket Association (EBDCA), can breathe a sigh of relief, following the return of action through the kind courtesy of the Shell Road, Kitty-based G-Spot Lounge. On the same note, other cricketers who competed in the EBDCA Open 50 overs competition last year, of which Nandy Park Sports Club are the defending champions, can get set to do so once again this year, thanks to Goodwood Racing Services (GRS) who threw its support into the tournament for the third successive year yesterday.
At a simple presentation ceremony held at the G-Spot Lounge yesterday afternoon, EBDCA president and former national opener Rohan Sarjoo applauded the efforts of the sponsor, who recently committed to the resuscitation of Under-19 cricket in the area under his watch.
“G-Spot made a commitment to help resuscitate Under-19 cricket on the East Bank of Demerara, hence our reason for being here today (yesterday), while I wish to say thanks to former Guyana Cricket Board president Chetram Singh, the Managing Director of GRS, for his continued support for the past three years,” stated Sarjoo.
The EBDCA head said the problem facing his body to date is the availability of grounds to complete matches, as they only have two venues at present available – Diamond and Laluni – while the Providence ground, known as the mecca for cricket on the East Bank is not in good condition.
Despite this humbug, Sarjoo is looking to commence the Under-19 tournament which will have five teams do battle for supremacy from this Saturday, while the GRS Open 50 overs tournament, for which 14 teams including the defending champions will be competing, will commence the following Saturday.
Shakira Gafoor (G-Spot Lounge) and Ian John, Manager of GRS both expressed their company’s desire at being associated with the EBDCA on the respective ventures, prior to handing over the cheque and trophy.
“G-Spot Lounge is quiet happy to be a part of this Under-19 tournament, having made a commitment to the EBDCA to do so and we will continue to sponsor this tournament in the years ahead, as we hope it will be used to develop the youths in that area, with regard to cricket,” said Gafoor.
In his brief remarks, John said they are very pleased to be sponsoring the Open 50 overs tournament for the third successive year, even with the knowledge that the EBDCA was faced with the unavailability of grounds to run off several tournaments.
“We hope the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils do what is necessary on the grounds to ensure cricket is being played, as we view it as important,” said John, who also took the time to applaud the EBDCA on its efforts to revive the game in the mining town of Linden.
“Everybody knows that Linden is known more for football and basketball and for the EBDCA to go into that area and resuscitate the sport of cricket, speaks volumes on their developmental plans for the game on the East Bank of Demerara and I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate them.”
The Open tournament will bowl off on April 1 with several matches across the EBDCA and will be played on a round robin basis, while the Under-19 tournament, which will have matches being contested at the Bayroc ground in Linden, will be a knock-out affair among the five teams.
Trophies and medallions will be up for grabs for the first- and second-placed finishers of both tournaments along with the Most Valuable Players, while medallions will also be issued for several individual performances.
