THE following message of congratulation from President Donald Ramotar was issued yesterday to newly elected Pope Francis:

“On behalf of the Government and people of Guyana, I am pleased to extend congratulations to Pope Francis on his election as Head of the Catholic Church.
“His qualities of humility and compassion for the poor and vulnerable and extreme commitment to his faith will undoubtedly sustain him in the years ahead.
“His election has come at a time when there is a growing recognition of the rise of the Latin American region in the global arena, and we are especially happy that the region has been given this high honour.
“As Pope Francis takes up the mantle of leadership and responsibility, we wish him every success.”
