RDC Councillor asked to resign after fraud probe

PEOPLE’S Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) member of the Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam) Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Ms. Wazeeda Bacchus has resigned.
Her letter of resignation, read at the start of the statutory meeting by Acting Clerk of the RDC, Ms. Rameeza Mullah, said it was tendered for personal reasons.

Bacchus, who is a sports officer of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport attached to the Regional Administration, had served the RDC for more than a year.
However, during the meeting, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Councillor, Mr. Prince Shepherd enquired whether Bacchus had to resign or was asked to do so.
In response, Regional Chairman, Mr. Parmanand Persaud said Bacchus  was asked to resign after an investigation conducted by a commission found her to be involved in a suspected fraud with bogus tickets for  Essequibo  Nite last year October.
He said the probe is now completed but the police are still making inquiries and the issue was a very disturbing one in the Region.
