Damaged Kingston koker door to be replaced shortly – President makes another spot check

EFFORTS are apace to restore the broken koker door at Kingston, Georgetown, while interim measures remain in place to mitigate the effects of another high tide.

altYesterday, the broken door was removed and laid on Cowan Street for a thorough inspection, when President Donald Ramotar made another spot check in the company of Ministers of Public Works Robeson Benn and Finance Dr. Ashni Singh.
The door will be fixed according to the required standards since engineers are of the opinion that the design was inappropriate and that it was not correctly operated, Minister Benn said in a comment to reporters while at the site.
The Tuesday koker collapse came as a surprise, Minister Benn said, since there were more potential liabilities at another koker north of Kingston and one at River’s View where concerns were identified. He said the repairs hinge on materials and other resources City Hall will procure.
President Ramotar, who had visited the scene minutes after the breach, said he was thankful to all who responded promptly and went the extra mile to ensure interim measures were put in place. They included top ministry officials and several engineering staff from the BK Construction Company who worked up to late Tuesday evening.
Initial reports had suggested that the  failure of the koker was due to abnormally high pressure and as a consequence, residents were advised to take necessary precautions to protect their properties, and over the next few weeks when higher than normal tides are expected.
