Spring tide leaves Uitvlugt residents with millions in losses

MONDAY evening’s spring tide caused residents of Back Street in Ocean View, Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara to suffer millions of dollars in losses after waves measuring between 15 and 20 feet high destroyed cattle and other livestock, and domestic appliances with foodstuff and hardware.
The Chronicle newspaper visited the area  around 15:00 hrs yesterday

afternoon, and found that approximately 20 residents who were living less than 30 feet from the actual seawall had suffered extensive losses from the floodwaters which came with the tide.
One resident, Ganesh, took us to the devastated residences; and the occupants of those structures showed us their damaged beds, mattresses, electrical appliances and hardware items, among other things; as we also found erosion to the land in a few areas where the seawall was not in place.
Residents told this newspaper that the Uitvlugt/Tuschen Neighbourhood Democratic Council had failed to render them assistance before the high tide, even though they had made several requests for a reserve canal to be dug.

The residents said that neither the overseer nor any official of the council had visited the area when their complaints were made, and residents were left to battle the implacable ocean. However, the situation is now being monitored by  officials of the Ministry of Public Works.
