Police still probing two execution-style killings in city

POLICE are still probing the two execution-style killings that occurred in Georgetown and involved a businessman and a gold miner back in January. Police yesterday said they are looking for “some persons” for questioning in regard to the execution-style killing of city businessman Imtiaz Rupnarine.  They were previously looking for an identifiable male suspect, but have so far been unsuccessful in locating him. Nevertheless, the investigations are ongoing.

At about 05:30 hrs on January 24 last, 47-year-old Rupnarine, called “Bobby”, of Lot 208 Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, was attacked and killed by a lone gunman as he emerged from a West Ruimveldt hotel with a female friend, who escaped unhurt. His personal jewellery is suspected to have been taken away by the gunman.

Rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, Rupnarine was pronounced dead on arrival.

In an earlier interview, the Crime Chief, Deputy Police Commissioner, Seelall Persaud, had said that police had done background checks on Rupnarine, who had been a deportee from the United States.

Rupnarine’s wife, the mother of his two daughters, aged seven and two, reportedly turned up at the scene and identified his body.

In the execution-style killing of Mahdia miner Jason Wills, police say they are still conducting investigations and are following some leads, but no arrests have been made as yet.
Jason “Teddy” Wills, 33, of Mahdia was gunned down at about 20:00 hrs on January 31 at a friend’s house in Pine Grove, Meadowbrook Gardens, Georgetown; and the two other persons  who were in the building at the time when he was executed were both questioned then  released from police custody.

Police recovered .45 and 7.62 spent shells from that crime scene.

Two gunmen had allegedly scaled the fence and entered the house through an unlocked front door, and had sprayed Wills with bullets from two guns.

The gold miner had journeyed from Mahdia to spend some time in the city when he was killed by seven gunshot wounds to the body. He succumbed within minutes.
