THERE has been a decline and frequent disruptions of internet and telephone service over the past years on the Essequibo Coast by GT&T.While it is true that the company is facing a full range of unprecedented challenges (‘Desperate Times’). While the nation’s communications system smoulders, the crisis that began with us decades ago is still with us. I’m confident that the company will continue to grow, because its foundation is solid.
The company (GT&T) has made some important strides, and its directors as a whole encounter many barriers to progress. Perhaps, the most serious impediment is the slow pace in attending to consumers’ complaints which we in Essequibo face.
At the divestment agreement between the Guyana Government and GT&T,the company jointly and separately declared that they intended to protect and further the well-being of consumers and to extend the relationship between the company and the government.
Presently, Digicel is competing with GT&T; it would therefore be advisable for policy makers to give special consideration to the marketing of high-quality service without frequent disruptions. It will pave the way for the company to corner new costumers’ opportunities and tap into those invaluable markets that exist right across the region.
The implications for GT&T can be quite serious indeed if it continues at this rate. The company will have to pay greater attention to complaints and efficiency. In addition, if Digicel enters the telecommunication service GT&T will have grave difficulties in competing. It is evident that in the face of tremendous challenges ahead, and continuous rising expectations, the company needs to work for national cohesion with consumers.
Once upon a time a phone was just a phone. Now wireless technology has become an entire platform.
