BOTH Transport Sports Club (TSC) and the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) first division teams recorded victories over their respective opponents when play in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)-organised, Hadi’s World Incorporated-sponsored two-day first division competition continued last weekend.
Off-spinner Collis Butts took a match-haul of 9 for 30 runs for GNIC, who defeated Police by 5 wickets at Eve Leary, while TSC demolished their neighbours Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) by 10 wickets at their opponents’ Thomas Lands’ venue. At the Everest Cricket Club ground, National Under-17 wicketkeeper/batsman Kemal Savory struck his maiden first division century for Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), who were able to snare first innings pointes from the home team, who hosted the contest.
At Eve Leary, Police took first strike and scored 211 all out with Vishal Jaigobin being their leading batsman with 51 (6×4, 2×6), while Reginald Rodrigues made an even 50 (4×4, 3×6) and Pernell London 28.
Shameer Fazal and Rawle Brown assisted with 21, even as Orlando Kirton and Collis Butts took three wickets each for 39 and 42 runs respectively and Butts’ cousin Deswyn Butts supported with 2-34 for GNIC, who were bowled out for 137 in their first innings, off 54 overs.
Marc Nicholson led their batting 34 while Ryan Shun supported with 23 not out and Matthew Marques 21, against the bowling of Parnell London who captured 6 for 56 and S. Agard, 2 for 39.
Police in their second turn at the crease found the Butts clan too much to handle and were bowled out for a meagre 54, with Collis grabbing 6 for 12 and Deswyn 2-15 for their team who were asked to score 129 for a come-from-behind win.
They did so for the loss of five wickets in 31 overs, thanks to Elton Baker’s 71 and Ejaz Mohammed’s 37, while Troy Benn grabbed four wickets for the lawmen who were forced to settle for first innings points while their opponents took home full points.
At MSC, TSC posted 244 all out off 53 overs in their first innings, with Azim Azeez 57 (5×6, 4×4), and Jonathan Alphonso 48 (7×4) being their principal scorers.
Shaquille Williams snared 4-44 and Kwame Crosse 2-20 for the home team who were skittled for 131 in 51 overs in reply as only Delvon McEwan, 51, provided resistance to Keon Morris (6-25) and Ewart Samuels’ 2-11.
Faced with a deficit of 113 and asked to follow on by the visitors, the hosts were routed for 135 from 47 overs, with Crosse top-scoring with 35 and Williams 22 as Kevon Ross bagged 5-20 and Azeez 3-42 for TSC who reached their winning target of 22 without loss from 5.3 overs.
