New Era Ent/Cell Smart March madness tournament officially launched

THE New Era Entertainment, Cell Smart Super-8 basketball tournament was officially launched yesterday in Linden, with action set to bounce off this Saturday at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court. Eight teams – Amelia’s Ward Jets, Retrieve Raiders, Bulls, Wismar Pistons, Victory Valley Royals, Block 22 Flames, Kashif & Shanghai and New Era 12 – will be competing for a chance to cash in on the tournament’s top prize of $200 000.
Second through to fourth place are set to collect $100 000, $75 000 and $25 000 respectively. The teams will be divided into two groups of  four, with each playing in a round robin, after which the top two will go on to play in the semi-finals.
At yesterday’s simple ceremony, held at the LEND Building (Formally LEAP), the participating clubs were present as Cell Smart’s Sales and Operations Manager Lenford Malcolm expressed his company’s delight at being the major sponsor of the tournament.
He added that “Cell Smart is more than happy to play a part in helping the game of basketball blossom in the Linden community and more so we are happy to partner with New Era Entertainment in making it happen.”
Malcolm highlighted that Cell Smart, apart from being one of the major sponsors, will also be making sure that the loyal Digicel customers are given a chance to win credit and purchase handsets at reduced prices.
“On a nightly basis, Cell Smart would be giving away credit, and would want to encourage fans to make good of the opportunity to get these handsets as well. To the players, let me say: we are looking forward to an exciting tournament and also to help build the sport,” said Malcolm.
Alwin Benjamin, Ansa McAl representative, said that under the Mackeson Brand, the company is always happy to play a part in helping in the development of sports and more notably, in Linden, since the people of the community support their business wholeheartedly.
According to Benjamin, they too will be giving patrons a chance to win prizes in several novelty events planned on a nightly basis.
Ashton Angel Jr, Organising Secretary of the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) highlighted that the tournament is important to the association and the players since it is the first major event to be held in the year.
He added that in recent times, securing sponsorship was a sore point for the administration and since corporate Guyana is now embracing the game, the players should be responsible enough to play fair at all times and be good ambassadors of the game.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the day’s proceedings will start with a March Past of the eight competing teams, to mark the beginning of the tournament and then the first game would be played between Wismar Pistons and Block 22 Flames.
