TWO Russians and a Guyanese were critically injured and had to be air-dashed to Georgetown after an explosion around 12:00 hrs on Saturday during the disposal of unserviceable explosives by Rusal Bauxite Company in the mining town of Kwakwani.
A police report confirmed that among those injured were the three who are employees of the company and a fourth man, a rank of the Guyana Police Force.
The men were identified as Russian nationals, Andrey Kotsynbinskiy and Renat Muldashev, 33 and 55 years respectively and Guyanese Michael Inniss. They are all said to be in critical condition. The fourth person was identified as Police Constable Royston Chapman.
Meantime, unconfirmed reports were received that another person may have been affected by the blast, police said yesterday.
A motor vehicle belonging to Rusal was also damaged.
The police report said the three Rusal employees were air-dashed to the city and admitted to a private city hospital, while the Police Constable was treated at the Mackenzie Hospital and sent away.
Tragedy struck at Docker’s Ridge, Kwakwani, as an explosives expert, hired by
usal Bauxite Company, was in the process of destroying a quantity of unserviceable explosives.
According to the police, persons were cautioned to keep at a specific distance away, but it is believed that the persons injured may have unconsciously encroached and were affected by the blast from the explosives.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment has since dispatched a team of officials to investigate the incident.
