Home Affairs observing community policing 37th anniversary

THE Ministry of Home Affairs has commenced a month-long programme to observe the 37th anniversary of Community Policing in Guyana.

Activities being hosted by the ‘E’ Division (Linden/Kwakwani) Community Policing Executive began yesterday with road safety lectures to schools in Linden by traffic ranks of Mackenzie and Wismar Police Stations.
The 26 policing groups in that division will be embracing the various communities under the theme ‘Community involvement for community safety and security’.
The ministry said Guyana boasts of 252 active Community Policing Groups (CPGs) with more than 4,000  members and, during 2012,  a total of 30,345 patrols were conducted by them throughout Guyana, resulting in numerous arrests.
It said CPGs  have been playing a key and successful supporting role to the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in the fight to reduce crime in the country, particularly at the community level.
The ministry congratulated all members of CPGs for their commitment and voluntary involvement in community policing, noting that security is the business of every citizen.
It also acknowledged that CPGs play a pivotal role in bringing about a sense of security and the ministry urged every able-bodied member of society, man or woman, to be a member of a CPG.
