THE GUYANA Chess Federation’s (GCF) year of chess gets going tomorrow with the Republic Anniversary one-day rapid tournament at the West Demerara Secondary School, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara.
Registration begins at 09:30hrs and the competition, which is being sponsored by Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) under its Diamond Mineral Water brand, starts at 10:00hrs and an invitation is being extended to all chess players.
DDL Sales Manager Alexis Langhorne yesterday presented the sponsorship cheque of $30 000 to Shiv Nandalall, president of the GCF, and once again pledged her company’s support.
“Diamond Mineral Water is proud to contribute to chess as it is not only a thrilling pastime activity but it also helps one in becoming self-motivated, and increases imagination and creativity,“ she observed, while urging others to get involved in the sport.
Nandalall extended gratitude to the company’s representative and praised her renewed commitment for yet another year.
“Chess in Guyana will see continued growth because of your company’s role,” Nandalall emphasised.
Demerara Distillers Ltd today announced its sponsorship of chess tournaments for 2013 under its Diamond Mineral Water brand. Previously, the beverage giant had extended its corporate gestures to chess under its TOPCO brand for a number of years.
The tournament consists of seven rounds and each player would have 20 minutes on the clock during each round.
Trophies and cash prizes are at stake. Players are also reminded to renew their membership for 2013 on Sunday in preparation for the Federation’s Annual General Meeting scheduled for next Sunday, March 10.
