Employees avert fire disaster at fuel depot – owner slightly burnt

THE female owner of a fuel depot at St. Lawrence,  East Bank Essequibo, suffered minor burns earlier this week when  a small fire ignited during a transfer of fuel.

However,  quick action by  employees saw them activating  fire-fighting equipment  to extinguish the blaze which started just after 9:00AM.
Fire Chief Marlon Gentle, on Wednesday, said that the fire was brought under control very quickly.  He also mentioned that the owner of the gas outlet had suffered minor burns as a result of the small fire, which  was reportedly started after a spark ignited the blaze.
The facility supplies  mainly farmers with fuel for their tractors and other earth-moving equipment in the production of   rice and  cash crops.
The Chronicle was also informed that the  woman had to be rushed to a nearby dispensary after she sustained minor burns during  the blaze. Her name was given as Shivpersaud and she was said to have been discharging fuel to  a vessel.
The fire also damaged the administrative building  which is  next door to where the  fuel dispensers are located.
This newspaper was told that the fuel outlet is  approximately 16 miles from the Parika Landing and has been in existence  for well over two decades.
