School of the Nations stages exhibition on careers

SCHOOL of the Nations hosted a ‘Humanities Exhibition’ yesterday, when its first to sixth form students were given the opportunity to display work they have done in History, Geography, Sociology, Travel and Tourism.
It was held in the school’s gymnasium at the New Market Street, North Cummingsburg, Georgetown location.

Lending support to the effort also was the University of Guyana (UG) School of Education and Humanities offering guidance on which careers to choose. That delegation was led by Mr. Dwayne Benjamin, who deputised for Mr. Al Creighton, Head of the Department.

Ms. Mischka White from Humanities explained that the event was particularly for those in third form and thinking about careers in that stream.
The exhibits were judged and marks awarded based on the models and students manning the various booths were tasked with giving an outline of what the items inside depicted, as well as answering related questions, for which they were given points based on that performance.
White said yesterday’s programme was the third such and generated a lot of interest amongst the students. The entire student population, forms one to six, was encouraged to attend the viewing which, put together by they, themselves, was of a very high quality.
She said they plan to invite other schools to participate in a similar showing next year, so that School of Nations can build a relationship with them and exchange information.
White said the whole thrust was to get the third formers and even the first and second formers to begin thinking about having jobs in the Humanities sector exclusively, noting that Business and Science are areas always more popular.
The main subjects focused in the Humanities cohort at School of Nations are History, Geography, Sociology and Literature. However, at UG, Sociology is classified as a subject within the Faculty of Social Sciences while Literature is in the Faculty of Arts.
Yesterday’s booths, opened from 13:00 hrs to 15:00 hrs, highlighted, among other things, Deforestation and its Effects; Examples of Renewable Energy; the Hydrological Cycle; various aspects of farming, commercial and others; examples of Renewable Energy: Bio-Mass, Solar, Hydro, biogas, wind and geothermal energy; secularisation; Greenhouse gases; African Slave Trade; the origin of Music; Mashramani and other Carnival-like entertainment; Domestic Violence and Child Abuse.
