A WOMAN and two men are the latest to be prosecuted in the Guyana Power & Light (GPL) campaign to nab illegal consumers.
Valerie Giddings, Glendon Yaw and Cecil Gillis (no addresses given) appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore at Sparendaam Court, yesterday, charged with fraudulent divergence of electricity.
They all pleaded not guilty to individual charges, which alleged that, on Friday, February 15, at Prince William Street, Plaisance, also on East Coast Demerara, they fraudulently diverted the current supply to their homes.
Giddings said she has been living with her daughter in St. Maarten for seven years but, before she left to go there, she had disconnected the GPL service and put a man named Dexter Charles to stay in her house.
She declared that, when she returned, she was shocked to see light in the building.
Defence Counsel Gwendolyn Bristol, for Yaw, claimed he is a tenant in the Prince Williams Street house and he said when he moved in, there was power, so he just continued to pay his rent and live.
Gillis denied there was any wire attached next to his meter that the GPL workers said they found.
Cadet Officer Fredella Boyce, prosecuting, said, however, that a red and black wire was attached next to the pre-paid meter.
The magistrate asked the prosecutor to have the matter further investigated and postponed the case to March 15.
