MINISTER of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony has pledged that his ministry, through the National Trust of Guyana, has been and will continue to work towards restoring the 1763 Monument Complex on Vlissengen Road, in Georgetown.
He made the pledge while addressing the audience on Monday at the opening of the 1763 Information Centre at Square of the Revolution.
According to him, the ministry realises that more development is needed at the site and, in that regard, a plan was embarked upon over a year ago.
He said, since then, the fountain at the location has been restored, a feature which has not been operational for a number of years, due to persons constantly stealing the water pump when it is in place.
Anthony stated, further, that, by year end, they hope to put back lights at the monument, which would make it more beautiful.
The minister said there is 24-hour security there and one of the very disturbing things is that some persons who visit tend to practice improper disposal of garbage, which leads to unpleasantness.
He said, very often, the guards on duty complain about persons being abusive when they are admonished to dispose of their waste properly.
Anthony pointed out that there should not even be a need for security, as Guyanese should have embedded pride that allows them to take care of the area and encourage others to do the same.
“It is our site, it’s a national monument and it is this country’s pride… and if we, as the citizens of this country cannot protect a national asset, then something really is wrong with us,” he declared.
Anthony said the ministry hopes to work with several partners to develop the site and they want to enhance the entire area around the Monument Site.
