R&R 40-mile road race set for today

TOP RIDERS from across the country will converge on the West Demerara today when the 22nd annual R&R International 40-mile road race is staged from 09:00hrs, pedalling off from the western end of the Demerara Harbour Bridge, proceeding to Bushy Park, Parika, before returning to the point of origin for the finish. According to national coach and organiser of the race, Hassan Mohamed, the event is open to senior, junior, veteran and female riders.
In the senior category, the experienced Robin Persaud will look to defend his title, having won last year’s event in a time of one hour 45 minutes 16 seconds (01h:45m:16s).
Persaud will be up against the likes of Alonzo Greaves, who has been in impeccable form this year, Geron Williams, Marlon Williams, Paul DeNobrega, Raynauth Jeffrey, Walter Grant-Stuart, Orville Hinds and Rastaff O’Selmo among others.
A new champion will emerge in the junior division, since De Nobrega, who won this category last year, has graduated to the senior category while Talim Shaw will look to stave off the likes of Junior Niles, Kennard Lovell and others in his bid to defend his Veteran’s crown for this event.
The race is being sponsored by former cyclist and Managing Director of R&R International, Jacob Rambarran, who is expected to assist in the presentation of prizes to the top performers.
This race will serve as a warm-up for the 16th annual Cheddi Jagan Memorial road race, which is being contested in three stages and pedals off next Sunday in Berbice, under the kind sponsorship of BK International.
The race will start in front of the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic headquarters at New Amsterdam from 09:00hrs; proceed to Number 55 Village, Corentyne, before returning to Port Mourant for the finish.
