Alpha to face Santos for top honours in NAMILCO `One Love’ Football Classic

ALPHA United, who returned to the Fruta Conquerors-organised NAMILCO ‘One Love’ Knockout Football Classic, are set to challenge Santos Football Club in the final today at the Tucville Football for top honours. The double-header will see last year’s champions, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) battle Fruta Conquerors in the third place showdown from 18:00hrs, followed by the feature matchup which gets under way at 20:00hrs.
On Wednesday night at Tucville, Alpha United crushed GDF 5-0 in the opening match then Santos upset the hosts, Fruta Conquerors 2-1 in the feature match.
Riding on a goal each from Santos’ William Europe and Kishern Lovell, the eventual victors upset an over-confident Fruta Conquerors side.
The two sides battled on a partially heavy outfield dampened by rain and battered from the Alpha/GDF match. Santos were the first to go ahead in the 21st minute from a free kick scored by former junior national Europe.
Frantically in search of the equaliser, some urgency was seen in the Conquerors’ play as they eventually levelled the game in the 28th minute through a Dwayne Lawrence strike.
In the second half, the teams continued their see-saw battle but Santos who threatened to take the lead several times eventually did in the 59th minute when Lovell found the back of the net.
Earlier in the night, Andrew Murray Jr with a double; scored in the 23rd and 75th minutes and goals from Anthony Abrams (1st), Gregory Richardson (13th) and Selwyn Isaacs (21st) proved more than enough to blast the GDF side into the third place playoff.
