Three fires in two days leave several homeless

THE Guyana Fire Service (GFS) is investigating three fires, one of which occurred Tuesday night and two yesterday morning, hours apart in different parts of the country. The Tuesday occurrence was at Diamond, East Bank Demerara, where it left a pensioner homeless and Fire Chief, Marlon Gentle told the Guyana Chronicle that, so far, they have been unable to confirm that it was likely started by a faulty DVD player.
The Chief Fire Officer said the man who lost his home was forced to escape from the burning house by jumping through a window but it was reported that, earlier that day, some technical work was done on the music player which had not been functioning properly.
Gentle said the suspicion is that the instrument may have exploded and caused the conflagration.
Meanwhile, yesterday morning the firefighters in Region Ten (Upper Demerara/Upper Berbice) were called upon to respond to a blaze which destroyed a building in which several persons lived.
Information received suggested that it occurred just after 08:00 hrs but, by the time the GFS responded, the entire structure was engulfed in flames.
Gentle said it was only recently that there was a training session for ranks in the Kwakwani and Linden areas, which have their own challenges.
He said, after receiving word about the fire, Kwakwani and Linden activated the auxiliary team for the first time after they were trained but, when they arrived at the range house, although it had already caved in, the firefighters quickly went into firefighting mode and prevented the outbreak from spreading to other houses.
Despite being able to save nearby buildings, they got to the scene too late to prevent the one already burning, due to the rough terrain over which the tender had to travel before crossing the river.
That catastrophe, which has left six persons without a residence was still being investigated when an alarm was raised in Region 6 (East Berbice/Corentyne).
