MINISTER of Local Government and Regional Development, Mr. Ganga Persaud has said Mashramani is in the air within all 10 Administrative Regions of the country.
Speaking at a recent press conference in his ministry’s Kingston, Georgetown boardroom, he said the spirit has been prevalent in all the regions, especially in the Department of Education. Persaud said teachers and students countrywide were completing their Mashramani plans, including the Children’s Costume Competition, participation in the Calypso Competitions and exhibitions and creative aspects involving culture, songs, dances, poetry etc.
He also noted that those who successfully completed and won contests would have come to the city to participate in the finals.
Additionally, Persaud stated that his ministry, with support from Cabinet would have identified ministers for the flag-raising ceremonies across the 10 Regions.
He said nine Regions will host their flag-raising on the night of February 22, as they usher in the February 23 milestone, the exception being Region 4 (Demerara/ Mahaica).
Persaud said Cabinet Ministers who were designated to attend the various ceremonies will also interact with residents in the different areas.
He pointed out that people in Regions 1, 7, 8 and 9, because of the distance between their destinations and Georgetown, will have their own Mashramani celebrations while others will join in the central programme.
Persaud said his ministry, through the National Events Committee, will be participating in the National Float Parade and compete in the Small Bands Category and the floats’ depiction will fit the 2013 theme.
The minister urged all Guyanese to take part and support the event, stating: “Our sense of patriotism is what keeps us together as One People, One Nation and One Destiny.”
