NEW Amsterdam United and Alpha United were the latest teams to secure wins in the NAMILCO ‘One Love’ Knockout Football Classic which was contested on Wednesday night at the Tucville Playfield.
The double- header which kicked off at 18:00 hrs saw the Berbice team, New Amsterdam, squeezing past the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) 2 – 1 in the opening match then Alpha United sailed to a comfortable 2 – 0 victory over Riddim Squad.
Tonight the action continues with another double- header as the defending champions, Guyana Defense Force (GDF), faces the BV-Triumph Football Club in the opening showdown from 6pm then the night wraps up with the Guyana Police Force (GPF) going head-to-head with the host, Fruta Conquerors at 8pm.
Wednesday night saw NA United and GFC play matching football as the teams almost equally had possession of the ball but it was the side that held their composure for longer that would prevail.
The teams battled to a goalless 90 minutes which drove the match into overtime where NA United’s Jamal Butts would draw first blood for his side in the fifth minute of the first half. However, GFC’s Dwayne Fordyce found the equalizer five minutes later to tie things up again.
At the brink of half time, NA’s Leonardo Adams scored to put the Berbicians back on top until the end of the showdown.
After that showdown, Alpha United sprang into action against Riddim Squad, a team known lately to pull off upsets but that wasn’t the case on Wednesday.
Alpha applied their superiority to end up the clear winner even though they were prevented from scoring in the first half. In the second half, however, Junior Murry scored goals for the side in the 42nd and 60th minutes, Riddim Squad had no answer.
