ALONSO Greaves’ ability to sprint was further underlined yesterday morning around the inner circuit of the National Park, when he outsprinted Raynauth ‘Obeah man’ Jeffrey to take the feature race in the 22nd annual R&R International nine-race programme, doing so in a record time of 1h.15m:43secs. Thirty cyclists including Dwayne Gibbs, Paul De Nobrega, Junior Niles, Geron Williams, Alex Mendes, Walter Grant-Stuart, Raymond Newton and last year’s successful cyclist Robin Persaud faced the starter Joseph Britton for the feature event, which culminated the day’s activities.
According to reports, a close tussle for supremacy ensued during the first 32 laps of the 35-lap event, with several mini breaks being the order of the day, before Greaves and Jeffrey, who started the year on a winning note by taking the said event under the sponsorship of Ricks and Sari, made a move to front at the start of the 33rd lap.
They worked in tandem up to 200 metres from the finish line, when Greaves who rides out of Roraima Bikers Club outsprinted Jeffrey to take the top prize and at the same time eclipsing Persaud’s record of 1h.16m.57secs, by 1m:14secs.
De Nobrega, Niles, Williams and Mendes completed the top six paying positions behind Greaves and Jeffrey, with Jeffrey taking four of the eight prime prizes that were up for grabs. Williams, Niles, Jude Bentley and John Charles shared the other.
The day’s activity got under way with Rashidi Ceres taking the BMX 9-12 category event from Jamal Arthur and Shawn Grannum, followed by Raphael Leung’s win in the 12-14 category over Keon Harris and Britton John.
