COUVA, Trinidad (CMC) – Former Caribbean champions Trinidad and Tobago were beaten two-nil by Peru in a friendly international at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva last Wednesday night.
The Soca Warriors delivered a spirited performance but failed to answer goals in either half of the game played in front more than 4 000 cheering spectators.
The most high profile player on the field, Bayern Munich striker and Peruvian captain Claudio Pizarro, opened the scoring for the South Americans in the 29th minute.
Pizarro skilfully slotted home a rebound after picking up the deflected ball from Marvin Phillips’ partial block to Jefferson Farfan’s effort.
“When you lose you always prefer the result would be better so it’s not a result we would be happy with but may be contented,” said co-head coach Jamal Shabazz.
“But we are aiming to get to a point when we would be really unhappy with a 2-0 loss. At this time we’re trying to get there so this result would therefore not be one we are entirely sad over”.
The Warriors were unfortunate not to have found the nets after coming close several times.
One of those moments was when Kenwyne Jones misfired from inside the area after Ataullah Guerra’s mesmerising run in the first half.
Peru extended their lead two minutes from full time when Rinaldo Cruzado’s well taken shot flew past substitute goalkeeper Cleon John.
“It’s a work in progress,” said co-head coach Hutson Charles.
“We’re setting our sights on getting it right for the Gold Cup and tonight (Wednesday) we saw evidence that there are positive signs and something good to work with as we move forward.”
Trinidad and Tobago, who were edged out by Cuba in the finals of the Caribbean Cup last December, are preparing to compete in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the U.S. in July.
