GOVERNMENT has drafted an Education Bill which includes a provision to make nursery education compulsory. This disclosure came in response to a question posed by the Opposition in the National Assembly on Thursday. As it stands, nursery education is not compulsory in Guyana. The period of compulsory education is from age five years nine months to 15 years.
Research has shown the importance of early childhood education, and this has led to the advocacy for nursery education to be completed. However, no country in the Caribbean has thus far implemented this policy.
Government’s draft Education Bill is currently being analysed and discussed.
