Atwell lands WBC World Cup opportunity

EXCITING local boxing star Clive Atwell has landed an opportunity to enter the lucrative World Boxing Council (WBC) World Cup.

The international competition which had been twice postponed is now scheduled to begin in June of 2013, as the WBC has finalised its television arrangements for the tournament to be broadcast worldwide and is greatly anticipated by boxing fans worldwide.
The divisions to be included in the tournament have been reduced to four from the original eight. The four divisions are: featherweight (126 lb), lightweight (140 lb), welterweight (147 lb) and heavyweight (200 lb and over).
Atwell, the reigning WBC/ Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) super lightweight and national featherweight and lightweight champion, got his chance in the featherweight division, as CABOFE champion Salvador Sanchez was knocked out in his last bout and can no longer represent the federation.
That defeat created a tremendous opportunity for Atwell who has developed a respectable record on the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) monthly Friday Night Fights card, with his record showing 10-0-1 with five of his victories coming by way of knockout.
The WBC has mandated and approved a final elimination for the CABOFE title to be fought between Atwell and Venezuelan Rafael Hernandez, whose record is 21 fights – 15 wins (13 KOs), 3 losses and 3 draws.
Atwell will have to eliminate Hernandez to get into the lucrative competition and negotiations are under way for that fight to be held in Guyana on March 30 at a venue to be named.
The WBC‘s Caribbean Boxing Federation will be represented in the heavyweight division by Juan Carlos Gomez of Cuba who has an outstanding record of 55 fights with 51 wins (38 KOs) against 3 losses, with his only defeats coming at the hands of WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko, U.S. heavyweight champion Danell Wilson and Yanqui Diaz in 2004.
In the welterweight division CABOFE will be represented by Guyana’s Simeon (Candy Man) Hardy whose record is 10 fights (10 wins, 7 KOs) and who recently signed with U.S. promoter Cameron Dunkin.
In the lightweight division, CABOFE will be represented by Venezuelan Jorge Linares who has a record of 35 fights – 32 wins with 20 knockouts against 3 losses and is currently ranked number four in the world by the WBC.
