Woman driver must pay $1.2M compensation after accident

A WOMAN motorist was ordered to compensate another driver in the sum of $1,263,860 after she was found guilty of dangerous driving on Monday, by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court in Berbice. In addition to being bonded for a year, Irma Jerrick, 43, of Bee Hive, East Coast Demerara was given until April 15 to pay the cost incurred by the other woman for repairing her vehicle.

Jerrick was licensed to drive six months prior to the accident, which occurred on Fort Canje Public Road on July 24, 2012.
The complainant, Delecia Cumberbatch, a school teacher, had, minutes earlier, left the New Amsterdam Hospital, where she had gone in company with co-workers to visit another colleague.

She was at the wheel of motor car PPP 3207, proceeding south along the Fort Canje Public Road when the defendant, driving PPP 3553, proceeding east on North Road, failed to stop at the junction where a sign was placed to regulate traffic. Instead, she drove into the Fort Canje Public Road and collided with the right front of the other vehicle, causing both vehicles to end on the grass parapet.
