The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha is setting up a shelter at Ankerville, Corentyne, Berbice to accommodate some thirty to fifty children who are victims of abuse along with their mothers, regardless of their colour or creed.
The Dharmic Sabha on Thursday, January 31 signed the building contract with Kascon Engineering Service of Berbice to set in motion the construction of this facility.
The construction follows the donation of land by the Government of Guyana, fundraising activities that included the holding of two mega concerts featuring superstar playback singers Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal, besides other donations from generous individuals, families, businesses and the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha New York Chapter.
The unveiling of the building design was done in April 2012 by President Donald Ramotar and world-renowned singer Sonu Nigam.
The Dharmic Sabha said it will work closely with the Ministry of Human Services and the Child Protection Agency and offer assistance to any child who needs help.
In addition, it will spearhead many programmes in order to educate communities throughout the country about domestic violence and parenting. Rehabilitation and counselling programmes will be carried out also to ensure that these victims are ready to be placed again in a safe environment.
Meanwhile, the first parenting session will be held in Berbice in partnership with the Mothers Union in February.
Kascon has given the Dharmic Sabha the assurance that the project will be completed in ten months and it is projected that the building will be ready for use early next year.According to the plans, two members of the Dharmic Sabha from the Berbice Praant will overlook the construction.
The Dharmic Sabha in a press release expressed its sincere gratitude to all those who supported it in its efforts to construct such a needed facility through encouraging words, financial contributions and attendance at the two concerts held at the National Stadium.
The organization said also that it is looking forward to the continued support of everyone as it continues to work towards the welfare of the needy in Guyana.
