AS SOME Mashramani 2013 activities have already been completed, and preparations are well under way for the remaining activities to be staged, the Health Song competition has been cancelled because of insufficient entries. This was disclosed yesterday by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony at the ministry on Main Street, Georgetown.
According to him, they have received only four entries for the competition, and they saw it fit to call it off for this year, and hope that there will be more entries next year.
Dr. Anthony noted, however, that Guyanese have still supported the traditional song competitions, such as the Banks DIH Limited-sponsored adult Calypso Competition, and the ANSA McAl-sponsored Soca Competition.
He informed that for the finals of the adult calypso competition, the regional calypso performer will be The Mighty Explainer.’
Meanwhile, Dr. Anthony disclosed that arrangements have already been made for the flag-raising ceremony in the compound of Parliament Building on February 23, and regional officials have also indicated that regional ceremonies have been already organised.
Also, instructions have been already sent out to the various regions so that there can be some uniformity in how the ceremonies are conducted, as in the past there were complaints about these not being up to par.
And compact discs with national songs were also sent out to the regions to be played at the ceremonies
Dr. Anthony also informed that in terms of participation in the float parade, several entities would have collected their forms and started to return them, but some are still outstanding.
He expects some 30 bands on the road come February 23.
These bands, he said, will include private sector entities; government ministries; non-governmental organizations as well as regional bands.
According to Dr. Anthony, there is a special committee which deals with safety and security, which has been working closely with the police, fire service and Guyana Power and Light (GPL).
As usual, barriers will be put up along the route of the float parade, to control over-enthusiastic revellers.
Additionally, the Mayor and City Council will be responsible for making sure that the route is ready.
Dr. Anthony said that he hopes that with the cooperation of persons who will be out on the road, this year’s Mashramani will be a successful one.
