THE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport/National Sports Commission kicked off its now eagerly anticipated Day of Interaction last Sunday.
The activity, which was the collaborative effort between the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport/National Sports Commission and the Regional Administration of Region 10, was held at the Bayroc Community Centre ground and attracted hundreds of athletes, officials and supporters. In attendance were Minister Juan Edghill, Director of Sport Mr Neil Kumar along with Regional officials who encouraged all to use sports as recreation, healthy lifestyle and social cohesion.
Athletes travelled from various communities of the region including Silvertown, Block 22, Amelia’s Ward, Bayroc, Christianburg, Coomacka, Wismar, Canvas City, Moriah Elizabeth, Three Friends Mines, Old England, Coomacka, Aroaima, Kwakwani to be a part of the day’s activities which coincided with Linden Mashramani Celebrations 2013.
The competitions in both categories (male and female) were very competitive and successful. The athletes performed at a high standard. The sport disciplines which were registered were softball cricket (male and female), dominoes (mixed), football (male and female), volleyball (male and female) and circle tennis.
The results of the final games played are as follows:-
Female Cricket
After demolishing their opponents in the preliminary rounds, Aroaima and Wismar Hill competed in the final. Again, Aroaima were superior and demolished Wismar Hill by scoring 50 for 1 in 5 overs (C. Alexander 26 not out and R. Williams 20 not out) and reducing Wismar Hill to 33 for 3 in their 5 overs. Five teams entered.
Male Cricket
Parris Archer, who had an excellent day with the bat scoring 98 runs, led Kwakwani to an 11-run victory over Amelia’s Ward in the final. Kwakwani scored 42 for 1 (Parris Archer 38) and Amelia’s Ward 27 for 3. Four teams participated.
Dominoes
Kwakwani with 34 games, Canvas City 32 and Bayroc 31 competed in a close and exciting final. The teams were forced to play at their best as no quarters were given. Seven teams were involved.
Male Football
Canvas City held their nerves against Block 22 and were eventual winners in the final. Both teams played well in the early rounds and deserved to be in the final. Six teams played.
Trophies were awarded for outstanding performances by the communities. Sports gear/equipment were also presented to participating teams to encourage the development of sports in the region.
The Bayroc sport facility, if developed and maintained, can be utilised to host first-class activities. It can accommodate many outdoor and indoor sport disciplines.
The facility is beautiful in its natural setting.
The skills and ability displayed by the athletes especially the females are encouraging and must be exposed for development.
The day’s programme was a manifestation and demonstration of how the Days of Interaction bridge communities through sports.
Athletes travelled more than one hundred miles to participate in the day’s activities.
