COUNSEL Peter Hugh, representing Chandrapaul Chateram for the murder of Gopaul Singh on Septemer 14th , 2007, had a no-case submission on behalf of his client overruled yesterday by Justice Ravindra Singh. Chateram, who was called upon for a defence, was told about three options available to him , that is, he could take refuge in silence by remaining in the dock and saying nothing, or he could give an unsworn statement from the dock where no one could question him, or he could go to the witness box and give a statement on oath where he would be subjected to cross-examination as the prosecution’s witness.
He elected to give an unsworn statement from the dock, in which he claimed to be innocent.
His counsel will address the jury this morning and it is expected that the judge will sum up this afternoon.
