ACTIVITIES for the Children’s Mashramani Competition 2013, Georgetown district yesterday kicked off at the National Cultural Centre (NCC) with Nursery, Primary and Secondary students vying for a spot in the finals for Calypso and Dramatic Poetry. The National Competition will be held at the same venue from February 13-15. In brief remarks before the commencement of the competition, Chief Education Officer Olato Sam said that this competition is a great opportunity to display the wide range of talents of Guyanese children, and ensures that they grow up to be well-rounded individuals.
Sam added that social and emotional developments are as important as academia, as the arts and academia complement each other.
He also noted that through these activities, children develop a deeper appreciation for life and it also helps to build and preserve the Guyanese culture and connect us as a people.
Sam indicated that the competition was well structured and organised by a very capable team, and congratulated the teachers, students, and stakeholders on their hard work.
He hopes that they will continue to build the nation through activities such as these.
Meanwhile, students from both private and public schools across Georgetown performed their calypso and dramatic pieces to an appreciative audience.
Participants came from schools including East Street Nursery ; Enterprise Nursery; School of the Nations; Green Acres Nursery; St. Stephens Primary and South Ruimveldt Primary.
Judges at the competition included Sean Bhola, Henry Rodney and Simone Dowding.
The Dance and Masquerade competition for the Georgetown district will be held today at 09:30 hrs at the NCC.
