GECOM records 4,471 newly registered persons : – up to last Saturday

FOLLOWING the commencement of the 4th Cycle of Continuous Registration, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has recorded 4,471 newly registered persons up to last Saturday. This was revealed by GECOM’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Vishnu Persaud who, in a telephone interview yesterday, said that all GECOM offices are up and running smoothly.
He also disclosed that the Commission will soon commence mobile registration in the far flung and riverine areas in order to register people who find it difficult to visit the offices.
According to a statement issued by GECOM last Friday,  its Chairman  Dr. Steve Surujbally  has challenged the Registration Officers attached to the nationwide Registration Offices to demonstrate unswerving efficiency with respect to the conduct of the ongoing  4th Cycle of Continuous registration.
According to the statement, this challenge was made during remarks which Dr. Surujbally gave at a one-day meeting of the Senior Managers of the GECOM Secretariat and the Registration Officers on Friday at the Hotel Tower.
“The objectives of this meeting were for the participants to (1) report on the first two weeks of the 4th cycle of Continuous Registration, (ii) discuss and make recommendations regarding issues that have evolved during the first two weeks of the exercise, and (iii) discuss any administrative issue which might be affecting the implementation of the exercise,” GECOM stated.
The commission commenced the conduct of the 4th Cycle of Continuous Registration on January 21 and will conclude the exercise on Saturday, May 18.
Anyone who will be 14 years or older by June 30, 2013, and is a Guyanese citizen by birth, descent, naturalization, or is a citizen from a Commonwealth country living in Guyana for one year or more, is eligible for registration during this registration exercise.
During this registration exercise, persons eligible for registration are required to visit the Registration Office that is responsible for their area of residence to apply for registration.
The PRO, in his release, advised that applications for registration can be made accordingly at the respective 27 GECOM Permanent Registration Offices across Guyana, or at the relevant Temporary Registration Offices.
He said that 49 Temporary Registration Offices have been established across the ten Administrative Regions to make opportunities for registration easily accessible.
GECOM has also advised that it is the civic duty of all Guyanese who meet the eligibility requirements to apply for registration during this 4th Cycle of Continuous Registration.
“By so doing, you would (1) be taking the required step towards being issued a National Identification Card upon completion of the registration process, and (ii) be included in the Official Lists of Electors for future elections, if you meet the other eligibility criteria,” the release added.
