Warren ‘40’ McKay takes the 40-mile title again!

WARREN ‘40’ McKay yesterday devoured the field filled with the country’s top cyclists to retain his 40-Mile road race crown. Organised by the National Sports Commission (NSC), the race is held in commemoration of Guyana’s Republic Day (Mashramani) celebration.
McKay clocked a time of one hour, 40 minutes and 36 seconds to hoist the trophy for the race that started and ended at the Demerara Harbour Bridge. Orville Hinds finished third while Rastaff Oslemo took fourth and Akeem Arthur finished fifth.
The top finishers easily distant themselves from the bunch, forming their own pack through out most part of the race though they found it a bit difficult navigating through the rough terrain when the race passed the Parika village.
However, not fazed by the territory, the pack led by McKay endured several battles amongst themselves since everyone eyes was set on not allowing him (McKay) to win another title in the same even he had dominated last year.
McKay waited until the last 100 meters before he used is supreme sprinting speed to separate himself from his close rivals.
Meanwhile, in the junior event Raul Leal prevailed to take the top position pushing Arthur and Alonzo Ambrose into second and third respectively.
The veteran category was won by Junior Niles leaving Stephen Fernandes to take the second spot in the event. National female cyclist Naomi Singh took home the female’s title of the event.
