COMMODORE Gary Best was returned unopposed as president of the Guyana National Rifle Association (GNRA), following its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Elections held last week at the Bank of Guyana Roof Garden. Also unopposed were Richard B. Fields SC. and ACP (ret’d) Paul Slowe who retained the vice-presidents’ positions. Ryan Sampson was returned as the honorary secretary and Lt Col. Terrence Stuart as the treasurer. Both were unopposed.
The assistant/secretary treasurer remains Hemant Narine. The other proposed nominee was Ms Vidushi Persaud.
Mahendra Persaud and Dylan Fields were renamed the Fullbore captain and vice-captain respectively, Dale Hing was named the new Smallbore captain with Gordon Richards as his deputy.
Last week’s AGM was deemed the best in years, according to Sampson as reports were given by the Honorary Secretary, Treasurer, Fullbore and Smallbore captains
The comprehensive report given by Sampson highlighted the activities of the Association with the high point being the hosting of the West Indies Fullbore Shooting Champions in October 2012 which entailed the upgrading of the Timehri Rifle and Pistol Ranges to international standard.
The competitors from the visiting territories commended the Association for a well-ran championship as the GNRA created history by having its Patron, His Excellency President Donald Ramotar, fire the ceremonial opening shot. This was a first in the West Indies.
Guyana’s Fullbore Team won both team championships and the Guyanese marksmen finished in the first four positions with Lennox Braithwaite taking the top gun position and most of the individual prizes.
The smallbore team also attended three international shoots in Barbados and Trinidad with creditable performances.
In terms of Fundraisers, a Mash Bar was held as well as a take-away BBQ and Lime. This, together with donations from the business community, assisted the teams to represent Guyana and to host championships.
The treasurer reported on the positive financial standing of the association which has retained a positive bank balance.
Plans for 2013 include further upgrades to the Timehri Ranges, improving the competitiveness of the smallbore shooters, hosting at least three fundraising activities, hosting the Great Britain Rifle Team in April and attracting new members.
