Two charged with Linden Hospital $21.5 M theft

AN ACCOUNTANT and a male nurse at the Linden Hospital Complex appeared in a Georgetown Court yesterday, on charges of larceny by public officer, involving $21.5M.

Delon Saul, 35, of Lot 668 Industrial Area and Kenroy Moseley, 34, of Lot 129 Riverside Drive, also in Mackenzie, made their appearance before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell, charged indictably.
Particulars of a joint charge stated that, between December 13, 2008 and December 16, 2012, being employed in the Public Service of Guyana, they stole $12.1M belonging to their employer, the Government of Guyana.
Saul faced an additional charge which alleged that, between December 13, 2008 and December 16, 2012, being employed in the Public Service of Guyana, he stole $9.4M belonging to his employer, the Government of Guyana.
Police Sergeant Alexis Hosanna-David, prosecuting, objected to bail for the duo, on the ground that more charges are likely to be laid against them.
She said the evidence against the two is very strong and the police are seeking to seize $8M from Saul’s bank account.
The prosecutor argued that the accused could still flee the jurisdiction even if their passports are lodged and she said, during the investigation Saul’s motor car was seized and it is likely that the men will tamper with the investigations if they are granted pre-trial freedom.
However, the magistrate overruled the prosecutor’s objection and granted bail to the accused, $1,250,000 for Saul in both cases and $750,000 for Moseley.
The cases will be called, again, on February 25, for report and fixture.

Passports
Meantime, the accused were ordered to lodge their passports and report to Wismar Police Station, in Linden, too, every Monday at 09:00 hrs.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Adrian Thompson, who represented Saul, said the accountant has an unblemished record and was never involved in any criminal matters.
The lawyer said Saul was arrested at work on Friday last and kept in police custody until his court appearance and is willing to surrender his passport.
Other attorney-at-law, Mr. Gordon Gilhuys, for Moseley, said the male nurse never had any trouble with the laws before.
Defence Counsel said police contacted the accused and told him to visit the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and he went voluntarily last Monday, when he was kept in custody.
