“AT THIS point in time, my aim is to have all the County Boards coming together so that we can work together in one common programme, and that is getting Guyana’s cricket to where it belongs.”
Those were the opening remarks given by newly elected president of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Dru Bahadur, who held a press conference with the media, shortly after being elected at the GCB’sAnnual General Meeting and election of office bearers at the
Georgetown Cricket Club yesterday. The election of Bahadur which went unopposed, was witnessed by West Indies Cricket Board’s (WICB) Director Conde Riley and their Media Communications Officer Imran Khan, with Riley later saying he was pleased with the electoral process, since it was in keeping with the Constitution of the GCB.
Bahadur will have Fizul Bacchus (Administration,) and Alfred Mentore (Cricket Development) as his vice-presidents; Anand Sanasie (Secretary); Veeren Chintamani (Assistant Secretary); Anand Kalladeen (Treasurer); Rajesh Singh (Assistant Treasurer); Rajendra Singh (Marketing Officer); Andy Ramnarine, (Public Relations Officer ), and Colin Europe Competitions Committee Chairman, who were also elected.
Notable absentee from the newly elected executive body is the name of long serving Public Relations Officer Terrence Holder, who told Chronicle Sport that he declined the nomination to be re-elected to that position for personal reasons, but still stands firm behind the GCB.
According to Sanasie, while some sections of the media would have published articles saying the previous executive body of the GCB were found to be in contempt of Court, he is totally unaware of such occurring and even made reference to a few of his executive members, who all replied in the negative.
“I learnt of this first via an article by Rajiv Bisnauth of( Guyana Times), I can tell you and I have asked all the other executives of the previous GCB and none of us were aware or served with any contempt motion and I don’t know if that’s an intention, but I have seen it published in the media,” stated Sanasie.
Only two of the County boards, namely Demerara and Essequibo Cricket Boards, were present at yesterday’s AGM, while the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) was absent, to which Sanasie said reasons were unknown.
“The BCB did not attend the AGM officially, but I noticed some officials of the BCB were here in what capacity I am unable to say. Also there were some representatives from the West Berbice Cricket Association who did not participate in the electoral process.”
In addressing the issue of notice being served, Sanasie said “Notice was being served to all the member boards for the AGM and I was informed via an article in Stabroek News who later had a comment from me.
If I may say, a notice was sent one month in advance (as is constituted by the GCB) to all member boards with regards to the AGM.
I did clarification with all the Secretaries who said they have received same, while we were mandated to do a publication in a national newspapers (same was published in the Christmas Day edition of the Kaieteur News) while we went further to had delivered to all the Secretaries of the County boards, hard copy notices of the AGM.
We can confirm that the BCB was in receipt of at least the hard copy of the AGM and the BCB’s copy was sent to their New Amsterdam, Berbice registered address, and while I realised that it is the president who is saying he was not notified, that’s not my fault or even that of the GCB and I am sorry,” stated Sanasie.
The re-elected GCB Secretary said the national body will continue to work with the BCB, as they have never given up on the Ancient County body since they view that Board as an integral body with regards to the development of cricket in Guyana, adding that it was unfortunate that no Berbician was selected to the National Under-15 team last year.
The first item on the agenda for Bahadur and his team is getting Guyana’s Regional four- day and Super50 teams in top shape to contest the WICB Regional four- day and Super50 contests which bowls off next week, with Guyana taking on the Leeward Islands in Antigua.
