A SIXTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD unemployed man who, habitually, beats his mother, was sentenced to 14 days imprisonment yesterday, on conviction for assault.
Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo imposed the custodial penalty on Balram Pooran, of Belvedere Village, Corentyne, at the New Amsterdam Court, also in Berbice, who was released from prison two days before Christmas, having served a ten-day sentence for a similar offence.
The convict, on January 9, being under the influence of alcohol returned home and demanded food from his mother, Regina Kellawan.
The 79-year-old woman served her son the meal but, after he had finished eating, he called for more and was given.
However, after his third request was met with the answer that there was no more, he became annoyed and dealt the defenceless woman several cuffs about her body.
