TWENTY-SEVEN-YEAR-OLD Althea Lewis, who had attempted to throw cannabis (marijuana) over the wall of the New Amsterdam Prison in Berbice, was sentenced to two years imprisonment yesterday.
Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo also fined her $299,700 after she was convicted, in New Amsterdam Court, of trafficking 333 grammes of the narcotic.
Police Corporal Orin Joseph, prosecuting, called witnesses who testified that the mother of two was seen by prison officials acting as though she wanted to hurl something into the prison.
As a result, the police were informed and a rank on motorbike followed the motor car in which the woman was being driven and intercepted the vehicle in the vicinity of Levi Dam, an area on the eastern fringe of the New Amsterdam township.
Lewis, a resident of Cumberland Village, East Canje, also in Berbice, was told that she was suspected of having a prohibited substance in her possession.
A search was subsequently carried out and, in her possession a multi-coloured bag was found to contain separate plastic parcels with three packs of Bristol cigarettes and a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems of the hemp plant.
