Sarwan looking to make big impact in CT20 championship

HE WAS once given the tag of the ‘world’s best finisher’ in one day cricket, after former Australia’s middle order batsman Michael Bevan, while he led Guyana to the inaugural Stanford 20/20 title in 2006 and four years later, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Caribbean T20 championship. Two years later, discarded West Indies middle order batsman Ramnaresh ‘Ronnie’ Sarwan is looking to make a big impact in the final WICB CT20, which got under way at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad last Sunday and will culminate at the Beausejour Stadium in St Lucia on January 20.
In an invited comment with Chronicle Sport, after witnessing the spectacular opening ceremony put on by the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB), the 32-year-old Sarwan, who averages 21.04 in T20 cricket, said he is looking to have a bumper season with the bat.
“It feels good to be back in the Guyana team. Obviously a lot happened last year, but that’s behind me now and I am focused on what we got to do here as a team and of course I will be trying to contribute in whatever way I can,” stated Sarwan.
His form with the bat in recent times has been tremendous, whether for his home club Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) or his adopted club in England, Leicestershire County Cricket Club, for whom he scored four centuries in his first full season and was a tremendous influence in the dressing room.
According to the County’s website, Sarwan is an experienced, aesthetically pleasing batsman and Leicestershire followers saw why he averages more than 40 in both Tests and ODIs for the West Indies, adding that he would surely have scored 1 000 first-class runs had injury not taken away that opportunity.
“I am pretty confident, when it comes to my form right now,” said Sarwan.
“I have been striking the ball very well of late and hopefully I can take the same stuff that I was practising over the past month or so into this tournament and as I said earlier, see Guyana win another CT20 title.”
Looking at the composition of the team which won the first-ever WICB CT20 title right here at the Queen’s Park Oval three years ago and comparing it to the present one, Sarwan said there is maturity among the guys, while the camaraderie in the camp is a good one, a fact that was highlighted and later endorsed by the team’s skipper Veerasammy Permaul and manager Alvin Johnson.
Up first, would be the Combined Campuses and Colleges, whom the Guyanese faced in their first encounter at the Queen’s Park Oval last night, followed by two more games under the lights against Barbados on Thursday and Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday.
All sides being equal and with the confidence being displayed by not only Sarwan, but the other members in the Guyana squad, cricket lovers in the Land of Many Waters can certainly expect another Regional CT20 title from the boys in black.
