Despite state of capital city… : Tourism Ministry has big plans to penetrate markets

THE Tourism Ministry has some big plans aimed at further penetrating markets locally, regionally and internationally. But, expressing disgust at what he called the “disgraceful” state of the capital, Georgetown, Acting Tourism Minister, Irfaan Ali announced his intention to ensure that the first quarter of 2013 results in resounding successes for the country’s tourist development agenda. Speaking at a media briefing last Friday, he said he is satisfied with the gains made in all sectors of the industry, which saw Guyana not only improving its performance in critical markets overseas, but cementing its own identity amidst increasing competition for the small regional pie.
Amongst all of this, Ali noted the “rank and disgusting” state of the city and blamed poor administration and management. He said that this has  its continued impact on efforts to promote ‘Destination Guyana’ as a low carbon town with a clean environment and the highest environmental standards.

FAILED MISERABLY
The minister charged that officials of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) have failed miserably to address the garbage build-up and other concerns.
He lamented that the city has been a source of embarrassment for the Government and people of Guyana and described its managing as atrocious.
Ali remarked that the status quo continues despite the fact that the administration contributes millions of dollars and resources to the city.
The minister said it is time that the Private Sector gets on board while the politicians hunt for a long-term solution to the crisis.
He advocated that, as there is a major focus on cleaning the city, especially during the first quarter, there should be a strategy to have members of the Private Sector adopt and upkeep parts of it.
“It’s time we move on beyond the politics and the management issues. You have to work with those who are willing to do the work and willing to ensure that the city is clean,” Ali said.
