THANKS to 16-year-old Tagenarine Chanderpaul’s unbeaten half-century, the President’s XI handed the defending champions, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company Berbice, a shocking six-wicket defeat at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground, as action in the Guyana Cricket Board Senior Inter-county 50 overs competition got under way. At the Everest Cricket Club ground, perennial whipping boys Essequibo found the bowling of discarded national T20 fast bowler Paul Wintz too hot to handle, and folded for a meagre 92 against Demerara, who laboured to 94 for 5 from 36.4 overs in reply.
In Queenstown, GT&T Berbice batted first and were struggling against the pace/spin combination of Gilford Moore, Brandon Bess, Devon Clements and Eugene La Fleur, which left them precariously placed on 113 for 9, before Gudakesh Motie, who top-scored with an unbeaten 31, steered them to 151.
They lost the wickets of Richard Ramdeen (1) who was bowled by Moore (1 for 29) in the first over, followed by Sewnarine Chattergoon, who was caught at mid-off by Krishna Arjune off Bess (1 for 23), before Assad Fudadin 24 (2×4, 69 balls) and Gajanand Singh (10) added 29 for the third wicket.
The demise of both batsmen, thanks to Clements who was the Ancient County team’s main destroyer with 4 for 32, supported by La Fleur’s 3 for 26, saw GT&T Berbice catapult further into oblivion at 65 for 5, before Delbert Hicks 30 (3×4, 2×6) and Eon Hooper 12 (29 balls) added 38 for the sixth wicket.
Hicks was in a no-nonsense mood, hitting both Moore and La Fleur for six, before he holed out to Jeetendra Sookdeo at midwicket, when he attempted to hit Clements over the boundary in that area for his third six.
The demise of Hooper and Pereira (0) followed shortly after, but Motie who faced 37 deliveries and struck two fours and two sixes, found a worthy partner in Keon Joseph (7) and together they added 38 for the final wicket, with the former hitting Moore for two sixes in one over, before he lost Joseph who was stumped by Anthony Bramble off Sookdeo.
When the President’s XI began their reply, they lost Arjune, who was bowled by Joseph for one, a wicket that allowed Chanderpaul, the son of Guyana and West Indies middle order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, to be joined by Kevon Boodie, who was overlooked by Essequibo.
Together they added 90 for the second wicket from 21.2 overs, with Boodie, who struck seven fours including three in one over from Joseph, contributing 48 from 62 deliveries, before he was caught by Pereira off Motie.
From 99 for 2, the President’s XI slipped to 108 for 4, losing the wickets of Elton Baker (1) and Sookdeo (3), who both fell to Motie (2 for 27) and Joseph who took 2 for 36 from 7.5 overs, before he was removed from the attack for dangerous bowling.
Chanderpaul reached his half-century from 90 deliveries, counting three fours and two sixes which were struck in successive overs off Chattergoon, before Bramble ended the contest by hitting Hooper for two sixes in the 42nd over in his unbeaten 26, adding 46 for the fifth wicket with Chanderpaul as the President’s XI cruised to 154 for 4 from 41.4 overs.
Across at Camp Road, Essequibo won the toss and opted to bat first on a straw coloured track, a decision that backfired on them, as Wintz’s 6 for 26 and Amir Khan’s 3 for 18, catapulted them to 92 all out from 31.1 overs.
Royan Fredericks top-scored with 33 that was scored off 70 balls and included a six off Zaheer Mohammed and one four, while Ricardo Adams made 14, inclusive of a six that was struck over midwicket off Khan.
At lunch, Demerara were 30 for 3 from 11 overs with skipper Travis Dowlin on 6 and Vishal Singh 4, having lost Rajendra Chandrika (0), Chandrapaul Hemraj 6 (1×4) and Shemroy Barrington for 10, to the bowling of Anthony Adams who ended with 3 for 16 and Dillon Heyliger 1 for 19.
After lunch, Dowlin was caught by Fredericks off Ricardo Adams (1 for 22) for 7, while Anthony Adams accounted for Joseph Perry (11), before Vishal Singh who was unbeaten on a boundary-less 26 and Mohammed 14 (2×4), guided Demerara to 94 for 5 from 36.4 overs.
The action continues today at 09:30hrs at both venues, with GT&T Berbice looking to redeem themselves when they face Essequibo at DCC, while points leaders Demerara and the President’s XI will do battle for the top position on the leader’s board, at Everest.
